Building Communities of Care: Spiraling towards Strength

Picture3DAWN and Center for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes (CEHAT) partnered to provide training to nearly 25 domestic violence and sexual assault counselors who travelled from across India including Chennai, Kolkata, and Shillong. The first three days focused on strengthening core skills and deepening understanding of sexual and gender-based violence, and in the last 2 days the counselors were trained to become trainers and mentors in their home cities.

Participants learned about the history of the Violence Against Women movement in the US, and compared it with the history and challenges in India; the impact of sexual violence across the life span; the need for self-awareness and self-care; trauma-informed services; counseling and advocacy skills; and cross-cultural sensitivities. Using case studies, interactive exercises, attendees were empowered with new approaches and models to their work with survivors, their families and communities.
